I met this fantastic woman at the San Francisco Writer’s Conference. Susan Silver, author of Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets & Sitcoms, came all the way out from New York to attend. We’d talked on the phone a few weeks before–a free 15-minute consults on Author Friendly. She found my book and gave me a call.
Susan was a television writer for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart, Partridge Family, Maude, and more, in the days when women weren’t generally in the room. Luckily, the boys were smart enough to know they couldn’t write Marlo Thomas’ lines! You’ve gotta figure it wasn’t smooth sailing, though. I can’t wait to read it… the memoir will be published in May.
On the phone, I gave her some advice, we had a few email exchanges, and I told her about the conference. Fast forward a few weeks and I’m introducing a panel of self-publishing toolmakers (BookBaby, Pronoun, Smashwords, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital) at the conference. This woman stands up and it’s Susan, thanking me and some of the other panelists for their time. She’d done her research and knew what she didn’t know, so came to the conference to figure it out.
Turns out that Susan has a spot on an NPR affiliate where she speaks her mind on many topics. This week it was the San Francisco Writer’s Conference and my self-publishing services. How fun and generous. Take a listen. It’s just 3 minutes long. Thanks, Susan!
